1927年，北伐戰爭剛取得重大成果之際，國民黨“右派”為奪權叛變革命，發動了瘋狂的“清共”行動，短短數月，近31萬進步同胞遭到殘酷殺害，全國震驚，剛剛看到希望的中國即將再次陷入軍閥混戰和獨裁專製的深淵。由於沒有自己的武裝力量，成立不足7年的中國共產黨在國民黨“右派”的瘋狂進攻下，幾乎遭遇毀滅性打擊。血的教訓使毛澤東、周恩來等黨內進步分子認識到了“槍杆子裏出政權”的硬道理。生死存亡之際，他們臨危受命，冒著生命危險分赴湖南和南昌等地，聯合朱德、賀龍、葉挺、劉伯承等一批愛國將領發動起義，誓要組建一支真正屬於人民的軍隊。鐵血鑄軍魂，舍己保家國，本片講述的就是這一段慷慨悲壯的熱血歲月……
