故事發生在19世紀20年代的英國，瑪麗（凱特·溫絲萊特 Kate Winslet 飾）是一名古生物學家，然而，這個行當顯然無法讓她過上優渥的生活，所以瑪麗至今仍然在貧困線上掙紮，為了給病重的母親治病，瑪麗靠著在沙灘上撿化石賣給遊客來維生。 某日，一個名叫羅德裏克（詹姆斯·麥卡德爾 James McArdle 飾）的男人找到了瑪麗，開出了很高的薪酬，希望瑪麗能夠去照料他病重的妻子夏洛特（西爾莎·羅南 Saoirse Ronan 飾），經受不住金錢的誘惑，瑪麗答應了。可是，就在瑪麗剛剛見到夏洛特沒多久，兩人之間差異巨大的思想就碰撞出了火花，但隨著時間的推移，她們都在彼此的身上看到了自己未曾經曆過的世界。
